Was just reading Philippians this morning and an old verse sprang up…
Phil 2:3 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Used this verse in a sketch that I wrote for church ages and ages ago… It’s a really important lesson to relearn… especially as I grow older and work longer… I always see this disease in the corporate world where those with a wealth of experience or specialised skills/knowledge, shut out others who are trying to offer an idea or two…
Sure… these fresh ideas may fall through the cracks due to lack of farsight, but how these ideas are turned down are very crucial to the other person’s growth. When you read Phil 2:3… In humility consider others better than yourselves… WOW! How powerful is that?
That’s humility… Not shutting others out, but being humble is being teachable… “considering” that others may really have something to say. I hear some saying “but I have no time…”… well MAKE TIME… that’s what coaching and mentoring are all about… don’t start a vicious cycle…
Phil 4: 5 says “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”
I hope that as I live longer on this earth, I will decrease and Christ will increase in me… anyway, coincidentally, one of my resolutions is more humility! As we embrace life, it’s better to be humble than to be embarassed anyway… hahaha!
Shopping on a shoestring aka how to shop when you haven’t done so in a long time, yet don’t wanna go crazy and overspend.
If you find this helpful, you possibly fit this profile:
You have been saving up for a while now, or been tied down with lotsa financial commitments…
You are still saving up or broke, but somehow you’ve had a good break, and wanna reward yourself…
You are budget conscious, but hey, it’s the day out with your buddies!
You are feeling miserable, and deep down, you know you want some retail therapy
OK here are my tips
1. Big stone, small pebble theory: If you fill a jar with small, small pebbles first, you might have difficulties filling in the big stones at the end… So a common mistake is to try and budget by buying items which are dirt cheap to avoid splurging, but you end up with a LOT (of junk) and still would not satisfy your objective – which is I assume, to feel good. You’ll end up going out again, to buy something else…
My Advice: Plan what is that one thing you wanna get, something affordable yet of good quality, and suits your style… and get it first…
2. Focus, focus, focus or the Location, Location, Location theory: After planning what you wanna get, zoom in to the place that would sell it at the best price… Once there, spend the first half of your time looking for that prized item… You’ll be amazed at how many choices (price, style, features) there are… This process is part of bargain hunting… I prefer to call it, the knowledge hunt…
3. Accessorize – this is the fun part… After getting that ‘babeh’, you can accessorize… here’s where you may become really stingy and buy cheap accessories… You may end up with lots of cheapos… but they are cheapos with a purpose… not some random cheapos…
OK lar… that’s my shopping tip of the day! It applies to buying anything… a new dress, pet, notebook, car… apartment (?!)… yikes!
Hey y’all, sorry if I haven’t been blogging, chatting, answering phone calls, replying sms…
It’s the new mom on the block, trying out her new ropes and hopefully taking it all in before I’m on my two feet…
gotta head back to work and classes after this, ya know…
Some say, confinement’s the time when you gotta rest, eat, fatten the cow aka me for milk n butter, and prepare for the next baby which is in the not too distant future (all old people are hopeful)…
I say, confinement’s like a God-sent window to take off, take time to be alone with your family, and learn learn learn FAST…
Speed learning… how to change diapers, bathe the baby, breastfeed, rest in between… plus still have time to do what needs to be done!
And this alone time with family, is something I truly truly treasure…
Then there’s the dreaded colour, yellow… to avoid it, please sun baby for 5 mins every morning… something i sometimes forget to do… bad mummy!
Yellow… that’s a mom’s worst nightmare… if the baby’s yellow…
But hey, guess what… I’m the one who’s yellow… I think I’m missing the sun during this confinement period.
I was just carrying baby, and I realised that my skin has never been more yellow in my life…
Can’t wait to go sun myself again… I miss u sun…
NO, I haven’t really been confined in the house… In fact, I’ve been “travelling” between home and MIL’s daily, cos it’s definitely a good idea to get used to having baby at home… Daily trips to MIL’s are more for makan and companionship and letting baby Ethan spend time with his grandparents…
In fact, I highly recommend getting out of the house, and going on short road trips… takes away the post-natal blues… I had plenty (altho I kept them under control) cos of my dramatic labour experience… I was so thrilled when the waterbag burst on the due date, at 1 am… hey, the stork was on time for this baby! Plus I dilated to 10 cm by 8 am… lo and behold, baby Ethan – the strong and resilient and willful one (that’s the meaning of his name)… decided to stay inside, probably to absorb more of that Maggi goreng I ate, before checking in at Columbia-Asia hospital…
So after 40 minutes of pushing, Ethan wasn’t gonna show… I continued to feel him kicking and moving inside even as I was wheeled to the OT… Under anasthesia, I was like “Ouch” not because of pain, but because I was startled by his kicks… the fellas in scrubbies were like, “you ok? did we do something to hurt you?”
So at 10:19 am my lovely prince was “born” by the knife… I couldn’t see cos of the curtain, but when baby was all cleaned up, I got to kiss him 3 times… then I was sent to the recovery room, feeling all joyful that Ethan was safe…
I’m glad Ethan is a healthy bundle of joy, and even more happy that his blood test showed he had low bilirubin levels… could hardly see any yellow… by the next check-up, he didn’t need a second blood test… can u imagine, my poor baby taking blood tests!
Oh well, now it’s Benny, Ethan and me… three… wowz! I am so eager to fill up my home with Ethan and his stuff… I mean, I can’t wait to see him develop, grow up, make friends, fill his room with stuff! Meanwhile, people have asked *cautiously* if I would have another child… despite the ordeal of labour… hey I say yes… labour wasn’t a deterrent for me… I did have the post-natal blues, because it was more like self-disappointment that I couldn’t push Ethan out… but, hey, pregnancy, labour and birth… if you’re gonna get a beautiful baby like Ethan, I say it can’t be more worth my time and effort!
Ooo just looking at myself over the past three weeks… aiya-yai… what drastic changes…
I look like a participant in the biggest loser asia… altho this participant would be heavily pregnant, unlike the rest…
Week 37 – that’s the one in front of the car
Week 38 – in the pink dress
Week 39 – in grey
The nose is alarmingly big tho…
- week 39
- week 38
- week 37
I forgot to take a photo of the prawns!
- the most obese, juicy and tasty prawns ever
and I forgot to take a photo of them at my bro-in-law’s wedding dinner on Saturday…
It was a tiring weekend for me cos of my own obesity, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was fun to be present at the wedding, although I didn’t really participate much since I kept a mental note to stay calm and relaxed.
Other after thots:
As it turned out, the tai-kam-jeh really looked like Lilian Too
- we had joked about hiring Lilian Too since CNY altho we meant tai-kam-jeh
Goes to show that names can really determine the person… hmm, better choose a name wisely for my baby!
Time waits for no man
- only feels like yesterday when the talk of the wedding started and now, ah so, another special occasion over!
